Toni Kroos agrees new Real Madrid deal to make him world's highest-paid German player

Manchester United and Manchester City had been linked with his services in recent weeks.

Toni Kroos has committed himself to Real Madrid until the summer of 2022. The club announced the new agreement on Wednesday (12 October) following recent speculation
linking the German with a bidding war between Manchester United and Manchester City.

The 26-year-old midfielder moved to the Champions League winners in the summer of 2014 from Bayern Munich.

Former Manchester United boss David Moyes and Chelsea, then managed by Jose Mourinho,
were then reportedly interested in the Germany international, but Real Madrid eventually won his signature.

Kroos has since become a key player at the Santiago Bernabeu, forming an impressive midfield alongside Luka Modric and Casemiro last season as Real conquered the Champions
League.
However a number of reports during the summer transfer window, including one by The Sun, claimed Pep Guardiola was after a reunion with his former Bayern charge at
Manchester City.

Guardiola eventually signed Ilkay Gundogan instead, but a report in Spain last month claimed City had not given up on Kroos and were ready to battle it out with their cross-city
rivals for the player's services.
Whether there was anything to the rumours is unknown, but a move now seems impossible with Real Madrid announcing that Kroos has
signed a new deal to remain at the club until 2022.

"Real Madrid C . and Toni Kroos have come to an agreement on a contract extension which will see the player linked to the club until 30 June 2022," the club confirmed.

"Toni Kroos will speak to the media tomorrow in the press room of the Santiago Bernabéu stadium."
The news came just a day after Bild reported that Kroos was set to be given a bumper deal worth €120m (£108m, $132m) over the next
six seasons to make him the highest-paid German player in the world.
